The said programme started with the welcome address by Lecturer Rafiq Ahmed, HoD Environmental Sciences. The Chief guest and Resource person on the occasion was Dr. Javaid Iqbal Zargar, Principal GDC Kilhotran who in his ornate address said that Drug abuse and addiction is disease that affects the brain and behaviour. Addiction to drugs increases the urge to use them, no matter how much harm the drugs may cause. Drug abuse is when legal or illegal substances and used in ways that it should not be used. Drug abuse may be in the form of taking more than the regular dose of medicines or using someone else’s prescription. Drugs may be abused to feel good, ease stress or avoid reality. Addiction is when a behaviour cannot be stopped and not just when it puts health in danger or cause financial, emotional and other problems for self or their loved ones. That urge to get and use drugs can fill up every minute of the day, even if there is an intention to quit. Dr. Zargar in his keynote address also said that Drug addiction is not only about heroin, cocaine or other illegal drugs, but also about alcohol, nicotine, opoid painkillers and other legal substances. At first, a drug may be preferred because of the way it makes the user feel. A user of drugs believes that how much and how often it is used can be controlled. But over time, drugs change how the brain works and the person loses control over its usage leading to damaging behaviours. During the programme students from different Semesters of the college has thorough discussion on the theme with Resource person and other faculty members of the college namely Dr. Tanveer Hussain, Dr. Wahied Khawar Balwan, Majid Ganaie, Yasar Arfat, Dr. Barket Ali and Chanchal Singh in Question-Answer session. The session was well received by the students. The objective of organizing this kind of activity was to spread awareness among the students about the substance abuse. The seminar ended with vote of thanks by Arshad Ayoub Mattoo HoD Political Science and Nodal Officer Red Ribbon Club.
